Speak Love

Speak Love
By Annie F. Downs

About the book:
You’ve heard, ‘Think before you speak’ a hundred times, and probably shrugged it off just like that other insightful phrase, ‘Your face will freeze like that if you’re not careful.’ But unlike a facial expression, our words do stick around. Which means everything you say—from what tell your friends, whisper about your enemies, post online, mutter to yourself, or even say to the celebrity you ran into at the coffee shop—carries a whole lot of power. The question is, are you ready to use that power to make a real difference? Because the truth is, you could be part of the first generation who uses their words to build up and not tear down, and even kill the mean girl mentality. Through very funny stories, Scripture, and a real understanding of the good, bad, and ugly ways we can use our words, Annie Downs explores the difference you can make when you speak love to others, to God, and even to yourself. Because when you speak love, you speak life. And that’s what matters.

My thoughts:

I love Annie Downs. Her blog, her books, her tweets. All of it, she is real and relatable. I don't know how to describe "Speak Love." Its awesome and something we don't see often. The best way to talk about it is to let Annie herself as she did so wonderfully through the enter month of October posting about ways to speak love everyday.

Sisterchicks Take Flight

Sisterchicks Take Flight
By Robin Jones Gunn and Cindy Hannah

About the book:
Spread your wings and really go places with Take Flight , the first devotional/ponder/prayer/make-it-what-you-need book in the Sisterchicks in the Word series! Robin Jones Gunn and her Sisterchick, Cindy Hannan, offer a collection of fresh, insightful devotions that will rejuvenate the quiet time gone dry. Along with key Scripture verses, they kick in travel tips, wisdom (such as, when a woman knows she’s loved, she can do anything ), Sisterchick locators (find me the best scone in the world!), and more. Complete with ideas for Sisterchickin’ (slang for Sisterchicking; activities for Sisterchicks to do together, as in, “Don’t bother us now; we’re Sisterchickin’!” Not to be confused with Sisterchicken). New. Deep. Different. Fun!

Ready to spread your wings and really go places? No more flitting. No more dawdling. It’s time to dig deep into God’s boundless grace and take flight!

Maybe you’re stuck in a quiet time gone dry. Or perhaps you’re an early bird, eager to get the worm. For every Sisterchick seeking a fresh time with God, this devotional/ponder/prayer/excuse-to-gather-together book will send you soaring. Straight from Robin’s nest and Cindy’s perch, you’ll find a collection of insightful devotions, key Scripture verses, and wit ’n whimsy wisdom for the journey, along with Sisterchickin’ suggestions, space to pen a peep or two from you, and more!

My thoughts:

Have you ever wondered what a Sisterchick is? It is: A friend who shares the deepest wonders of your heart, loves you like a sister, and provides a reality check when you're being a brat.

Robin Jones Gunn wrote a while series of books about them (you should check them out they're great!) and has now given is a devotional filled with the God stories she loves to tell.

Now, Robin and her real life Sisterchick Cindy Hannan bring a devotional packed of true Sisterchick moments, reflections of how they relate to Gods word, and challenges to explore with your own sisterchicks while drawing closer to The Lord.

This devotion was everything I imagined it be and as warm as all of Robin Jones Gunn's other books filled with whit 'n whimsy. Grab a copy and be ready to take flight.

The Unlikely Debut of Ellie Sweet

The Unlikely Debut of Ellie Sweet
By Stephanie Morrill

About the book:
For once, Ellie Sweet has it all together. Her hair now curls instead of fuzzes, she’s tamed the former bad-boy, Chase Cervantes (she has, right?), and her debut novel will hit shelves in less than a year. Even her ex-friends are leaving her alone. Well, except for Palmer Davis, but it can’t be helped that he works at her grandmother’s nursing home.

Life should feel perfect. And yet, it’s not that easy. Ellie’s editor loves her, but the rest of the publishing biz? Not so much. And they’re not shy about sharing their distrust over Ellie’s unlikely debut.

Ellie has always been able to escape reality in the pages of her novel, but with the stress of major edits and rocky relationships, her words dry up. In fiction, everything always comes together, but in real life, it seems to Ellie that hard work isn’t always enough, the people you love can’t always be trusted…and the dream-come-true of publishing her book could be the biggest mistake she’s made yet.

My thoughts:

The first Ellie Sweet book was fantastic and now the second one, The Unlikely Debut of Ellie Sweet, fits right along with it.

What I like most is that Ellie is so everyday, in a good way! There's something every one can find about her to relate to. My favorite part was right in the beginning actually when she's going to youth group with Chase and she's thinking about how it's so awesome this is her life. Like she's arrived and nothing could ever take her down again because she's made it to what she thinks she wants. But then the book evolves as she sees you never arrive because we're always changing and new dreams emerge.

Ellie shows such growth in the on many different levels. She battles the ups and downs of relationships while learning forgiveness along will the standards she will and won't set for herself.

Grab both books in the Ellie Sweet series. It's unlikely that'll you be able to put them down.

Paige Torn

Paige Torn
By Erynn Mangum

About the book:
Everyone knows they can count on Paige Alder. But between volunteering at church, putting in overtime at work, and helping her best friend plan an anniversary party, she's lucky to grab a cheese stick for dinner. Paige can't even remember the last time she had a few minutes to relax or dig into God's Word. Then she meets laid-back Tyler, an attractive, Jesus-loving guy. Will he be able to help Paige get her priorities on track?

My thoughts:
Erynn Mangum has a real cohesiveness in all of her books, "Paige Torn" is no different. All the main characters seems to be striving their best to have a better, more consistent relationship with The Lord. A character we can never have enough of because it feels like they are just like one of us.

Paige feels compelled to do as much for others a she can. Everyone in her life is having a big event and everyone depends on her for one thing or another. Paige finds herself running on empty and not saying no.

Paige is so relatable, I think anyone who has ever struggled to say no will relate to her and the lessons learned. "Paige Torn" is a fast and light read. I can't wait for the next one in the series.

Splitting Harriet

Splitting Harriet
By Tamara Leigh

About the book:
Once upon a time, I was a rebel. And I have the tattoo to prove it.

Then there was the spiked hair–the shade of which changed monthly–“colorful” language that can’t be found in your everyday sixteen-count crayon box, a pack-a-day habit, less-than-modest wardrobe, and an obsession with guitar-trashing, drum-bashing music.

Did I mention I’m also a preacher’s kid? That’s right. And like the prodigal son after whom I modeled myself, I finally saw the error of my ways and returned to the fold.

Today my life is all about “lead me not into temptation.” When I’m not serving as Women’s Ministry Director at my father’s church, I’m working at Gloria’s Morning Café. I even have worthy goals, like saving enough money to buy the café, keep my Jelly Belly habit under control, and to never again hurt the people I love. No more parties. No more unsavory activities. And no more motorcycles! You’d think I was finally on the right track.

But since my dad’s replacement hired a hotshot church consultant to revive our “dying” church, things aren’t working out as planned. And now this “consultant” says I’m in need of a little reviving myself. Just who does this Maddox McCray think he is anyway? With his curly hair that could use a good clipping, tattoo that he makes no attempt to hide, and black leather pants, the man is downright dangerous. In fact, all that’s missing is a motorcycle. Or so I thought… But if he thinks he’s going to take me for a ride on that 1298cc machine of his, he can think again. Harriet Bisset is a reformed woman, and she’s going to stay that way. Even if it kills me!(less)

My thoughts:

" Splitting Harriet" is a lot of fun to read. I love have Tamara Leigh continues her witty voice from Perfecting Kate.

Harriet grew up a preachers kid and then went off on her own. Know she has returned to her faith and is working in her fathers former church. A the director of Woman's ministry she is trying to make sure the church isn't changing too much. Yes, Harriet wants to make sure the church doesn't become too contemporary!

However, the rest of the church doesn't see it her way and decides to hire a consultants to change things up. Maddox McCray shows up and everything becomes awkward, he has the nerve to tell Harriet that she needs to change.

My favorite part of this whole book was the quirky sense of humor while presenting a convicting message.

Ring of Secrets

Ring of Secrets
By Roseanna M. White

About the book:
1779—Winter Reeves is an aristocratic American Patriot forced to hide her heart amid the British Loyalists of the city of New York. She has learned to keep her ears open so she can pass information on British movements to Robbie Townsend, her childhood friend, and his spy ring. If she’s caught, she will be executed for espionage, but she prays the Lord’s protection will sustain her, and Robbie has taught her the tools of the trade—the wonders of invisible ink, secret drop locations and, most importantly, a good cover.
Bennet Lane returns to New York from his Yale professorship with one goal: to find General Washington’s spy hidden among the ranks of the city’s elite. Searching for a wife was supposed to be nothing more than a convenient cover story for his mission, but when he meets Winter, with her too-intelligent eyes in her too-blank face, he finds a mystery that can’t be ignored.
Both are determined to prevail at any cost…and each is committed to a separate cause. Will God lead them to a shared destiny or lives lived apart?

My thoughts:
Roseanna White really knows how to make history come alive. " Ring of Secrets" is a jam-packed, fast paced, spy novel. I don't know if I've ever read a book like it.

Winter, keeps her true personality secret. She acts unintelligent so people will tell her things. As she appears harmless she wins the affection of two opposite men and must decide which and which side she's on.

Throughout the book I was never quite sure what Winter would do. "Ring of Secrets"has a smart, tangled plot filled with romance, history, and suspense.

Victim of Grace

Victim of Grace
By Robin Jones Gunn

About the book:
Robin Jones Gunn reveals poignant truths from her life as well as from the lives of women in the Bible as she flips the notion that we are at the mercy of circumstances. She asks, what if God has dreams for you? What if he is accomplishing those dreams in the midst of shattered hopes? When life doesn't go as expected, it's easy to feel like a victim. We look at the events that have gone wrong and view our lives as impaired. What if we could see our future as God sees it? Would our view radically change if we understood we are indeed victims rather than of happenstance? God, the Relentless Lover, has vigorously sought you. He has instilled dreams in your heart that are grander than you can imagine. But the route to their fulfillment often is through a path you wouldn't seek. What if God wants to take the hopes that tug at your heart and enliven them? Are you ready to live inside the mysterious joy of being a victim of grace?

My thoughts:
Wow! Is all I can really say. I wanted to read "Victim of Grace" because I love Robin Jones Gunn's books. I love the warmth her books wrap me in so ofcourse I wanted to read about her own life. I thought it would be the same as her books.

Boy, was I surprised. I never expected to find she struggled with so much, especially when it came to writing. I thought writing poured out. I thought she writes romance so that's what her life would be, romantic. I learned Robin is no different than the rest of us in struggling to find her way in her career, facing health problems, and finding contentment in the life God has given her.

Each chapter talks about a struggle Robin has had an parallels it with a woman from the Bible that she learned from and drew comfort from through that time. I loved it, she really brought Bible stories to life showing that we aren't no different than woman back then.

Even though I was surprised as I got into the book Im more inspired and admire Robin even more after reading "Victim of Grace"

Swimming Through Clouds

Swimming Through Clouds
By Rajdeep Paulus

About the book:
I live in the in between. Between what if and what is. It’s how I manage. It’s the only way I know. Everyone has their way. This is mine.
When high school cell phone disruption forces a classroom ban, the words on a Post-it note spark a sticky romance between two unlikely friends. Transfer student Talia Vanderbilt has one goal at her new school: to blend in with the walls. Lagan Desai, basketball captain and mathlete, would do just about anything to befriend the new girl. One Post-it note at a time, Lagan persuades Talia to peel back her heart, slowly revealing her treasure chest of pain—an absent mother, a bedridden brother, and an abusive father. In a world where hurt is inevitable, the two teens search for a safe place to weather the storms of life. Together.

My thoughts:
"Swimming through the clouds" is vivid and captivating. A lot of it is heavy and evoked so much sympathy for the main characters yet funny, bright, and sweet. Its a book I couldn't put down. Talia, Jesse, and Lagan afe compelled to move forward and it compelled me to keep reading through it all.

Talia is filled with strength abd courage. From the beginning I just wanted her to open up to Lagan. Lagan is determined and I'm so glad he stuck to pursuing Talia showing what it's like to be a true friend, even if the only way was through sticky notes.

The ending left me wondering and waiting for the rest of the story.

"Swimming Through Clouds" is an awesome debut novel and I can't wait for the next one from Rajdeep Paulus.

Perfect Glass

Perfect Glass
By Laura Anderson Kurk
About the book:
I couldn’t stop crying because it was so intimate, in that way I always thought being physical with him would feel. If someone had walked in they might have thought Henry was barely touching me. I knew the truth of it–
Things get messy when Meg Kavanagh gets involved—first with Jo Russell, the eccentric old artist, and then with Quinn O’Neill, the intriguing loner who can’t hide how he feels about Meg. Her senior year isn’t turning out like she planned, but sometimes the best parts of life happen in the in-between moments.
He commits to one year in an orphanage that needs him more than he ever dreamed. Thousands of miles from Meg and the new punk who has fallen for her, and absent from the ranch that’s in his blood, Henry Whitmire finds out what it means to trust. When you’re so far from home, it’s terrifying to realize you’re not who you thought.
But the perfect glass of calamity makes the best mirror.

My thoughts:
After reading "Perfect Glass" I feel much the same as I did after I read the first book "Glass Girl." Wow, how does she do it?

Meg is the kind of friend you want to have. She's deep and thoughtful and not hung up on trivial things. Henry is full of sweetness and wears his emotions on his sleeve.

Laura Anderson Kurk has a way of drawing you into your world like you are part of it. This series is a must read!

Joni & Ken

Joni & Ken
By Ken & Joni Tada
About the book:
This is the true love story of Joni and her husband of 30 years, Ken Tada. A love story showing what it truly means for a man and a woman to live in love … in sickness and in health.
Even the honeymoon wasn’t easy. Did Ken realize what he was getting into when he proposed to Joni, a quadriplegic woman? As their marriage years moved on, Ken became increasingly overwhelmed by the never-ceasing demands of caring for Joni, who begins to experience chronic, extreme, nightmarish pain. Ken sinks into depression, and the couple finds themselves on parallel tracks in life, married and living under the same roof but drifting apart emotionally.
But as they fight for their marriage and find their way through the mazes of depression and pain, they wrap their two lives around their rock-- Jesus.
During Ken’s denial of Joni’s diagnosis, and Joni’s thoughts of how wonderful a quick exit to heaven would be, they experience a personal visitation with the savior you will never forget.

My thoughts:
Most of us are familiar with the story of Joni Eareckson Tada, her diving accident, and how she started Joni and Friends (if you aren't, it's worth checking out!) but we don't know much about her and her husband. how they met and got married, what their life is was and is like, and how her quadriplegia has affected both of them. This book gives a glimpse into the story explains what God has taught them all these years and encouraging other to follow The Lord no matter how bleak your circumstances appear.

This was a really good book that at times was sad to read but filled with God's goodness.

Perfecting Kate

Perfecting Kate
By Tamara Leigh

About the book:
Kate’s Creed: Thou shalt embrace singledom and be unbelievably, inconceivably happy.

YEAH, RIGHT.

Kate Meadows is a successful San Francisco artist looking for a nice, solid Christian man. So when not one, but two handsome bachelors enter her orbit in rapid succession, her head is spinning just a bit. Michael Palmier is a hunky and famous makeup artist who actually seems to be flirting with her–rather than her physically flawless housemate, Maia. Trouble is, he keeps handing her business cards from various beauty professionals and plastic surgeons. Is he trying to stamp out every last bit of self-esteem she has?

Then there’s Dr. Clive Alexander, good-looking enough to be mistaken for Brad Pitt, who sends Kate’s pulse skittering every time he comes near. Too bad he’s only interested in her work–and doesn’t think she’s much to look at. It’s enough to send a girl running for her paint-splattered, relaxed-fit jeans and swearing off men altogether! But after undergoing a makeover from Michael’s staff, Kate can’t be oblivious to the admiring glances men throw her way. Maybe she should try contacts…consider some fancy dental work…and you know, that mole really could stand to go. The question now is, what kind of work will Kate do on herself…and who exactly is she trying to please?

My thoughts:
While trying to find confidence in the way she looks and determined to be a content single, Kate Meadows meets Clive Alexander. He's everything she could want. And he's equally as crazy about her with one exception, she drastically change her appearance. Is it worth it?

I loved how lighthearted and honest "Perfecting Kate" was while also being deep and thoughtful. Some may I say it was shallow but let be honest who hasn't had a ton of Kate's thoughts? I ended really admiring all Kate learned through her journey.

Captives

Captives
By Jill Williamson

About the book:
One choice could destroy them all. When eighteen-year-old Levi returned from Denver City with his latest scavenged finds, he never imagined he'd find his village of Glenrock decimated, loved ones killed by enforcers, and many---including his fiancee, Jem--taken captive. Now alone, Levi is determined to rescue what remains of his people, even if it means entering the Safe Land, a walled city that seems anything but safe. Omar knows he betrayed his brother by sending him away to Denver City, but helping the enforcers was necessary. Living off the land like nomads and clinging to an outdated religion holds his village back. The Safe Land has protected people since the plague decimated the world generations ago ... and its rulers have promised power and wealth beyond Omar's dreams. Meanwhile, Jem is locked in a cell, awaiting the Safe Landers' plan to protect their future by seizing her own. Can Levi uncover the truth hidden behind the Safe Land's facade before it's too late?

My thoughts:
Jill Williamson always describes her books as weird and they are in an amazing way. She creates her own world and hands you a one way ticket when you open one of her books.

"Captives" is fascinating. The Safe Lands is where "Captives" is set and It is described with vivid beauty. Each character has their own dialogue and story. For that reason it can start out a little hard to keep track of and understand but once you grasp the jist it's like your right there as one of them.

I don't know what else to say except that I really admire Jill's creativity along with the depth and complexity of her plots. The have to take so much work and she doesn't slouch, she creates a universe as vivid as the colors on the cover of her book.

The Revised Life of Ellie Sweet

The Revised Life of Ellie Sweet
By Stephanie Morrill

About the book:
Ellie Sweet is a lot of things—good girl, novelist, silent adorer of the new boy at school, Palmer. But when “outcast” gets added to the list, she decides it’s time to take reality into her own hands … and tweak it as needed.

In the pages of her book, she’s Lady Gabrielle, favorite of the medieval Italian court. Her once-friends are reduced to catty ladies-in-waiting, and the too-charming Palmer—who in real life never spares her a second word—gets to be nothing more than a rake wracked by unrequited love for her. She even has a perfect real-life villain in the brooding Chase, who hails from the wrong side of town.

But just when she’s getting along great in her fictional world, the real one throws her a few curves. With Chase pursuing her, Palmer wanting to date her—but in secret—and the details of her manuscript going public, Ellie suddenly receives more attention than she ever really wanted. And when her former-friends discover what she’s been writing, they’re determined to teach Ellie a lesson about the severe consequences of using her pen as her sword.

My thoughts:
The Revised Life of Ellie Sweet was an awesome read. I was never sure who I was rooting for.

Ellie was a great character, She's a teen writer letting out her angst in a book that takes her on a journey she never planned. Even when she was awkward and wanted to he invisible she had a great wit about her with a deep confidence brewing inside of her.
